It is fitting that the first entry in the blog is this little gallery of pictures showing a display we mounted at St Joseph’s College, Swindon, on June 21, 2013.
Education is key to Swindon in the Great War, so we were delighted to be asked to assist with Year 3 students’ First World War discovery day. It included a display of just a part of local historian Mark Sutton’s private collection. Four classes listened to interactive talks before being giving a chance to – as one student put it – “hold history in my hands”.
As the foremost authority on Swindon soldiers’ role in the war and the publisher of Tell Them of Us, a book that charts their involvement, Mark (pictured) is a founder of Swindon in the Great War and his collections will form a major part of local centenary activities.
